The purpose of this (1) hour course is to examine the risk of developing sepsis and infections in the neonatal period. This course will review factors that contribute to neonatal sepsis and immune responses that occur. Assessment data, treatment and interventions for neonatal sepsis will be discussed.
By the end of this course, you will have the skills to:
✔️ Describe at least two principal sources of newborn infection.
✔️ List at least five factors that increase neonatal risk of infection.
✔️ Identify two types of host defenses.
✔️ List signs and symptoms of neonatal sepsis.
✔️ Describe at least three common pathogens in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
✔️ Discuss diagnostic tests used in diagnosis of sepsis.
✔️ Describe nursing interventions for a septic infant.
