Course Description

The purpose of this (3) hour course is to provide information about child maltreatment, abuse, and neglect.

By the end of this course, you will have the skills to:

✔️ Define what constitutes abuse, maltreatment, and neglect in the state of New York.

✔️ Describe the behavioral and environmental characteristics of abusive parents or caretakers and abused or neglected children.

✔️ Identify physical and behavioral indicators of maltreatment and neglect.

✔️ Contrast the physical and behavioral indicators of sexual abuse.

✔️ Describe situations in which mandated reporters must report suspected cases of child abuse or maltreatment.

✔️ Outline the proper procedure for making a report of suspected child abuse.

✔️ Describe the legal protections afforded reporters and consequences for failing to report.

✔️ Describe reasons why child abuse is under-reported and ways to prevent abuse.
