The purpose of this (2) hour course is to provide healthcare workers with the skills and knowledge to care for patients requiring the use of restraints. Restraint use is very regulated by national and state regulations; therefore, this course will explore the regulations and how they affect healthcare workers and institutions. Because restraint regulations are different for psychiatric and long-term care facilities, this module will concentrate on restraint use in acute-care facilities.

By the end of this course, you will have the skills to:

✔️ Define physical restraints, chemical restraints, non-violent / non-self-harm restraints, and violent / self-harm restraints.

✔️ Discuss when to use restraints.

✔️ Discuss less restrictive measures and how they affect restraint use.

✔️ Identify risk factors associated with restraint use.

✔️ Delineate order set requirements for the different types of restraints.

✔️ Delineate nursing care standards for caring for and documentation of restraints.
